July 3 & 4 - Thunder Bay Ont

We were turned away from the Canadian border because we had firewood.  Who knew you couldn’t take firewood across the border?  The agent told us it was illegal to transport firewood in the US across county lines and had we been stopped the fine would be quite stiff.  So we had to go back to the US and dispose of it before being able to turn around and come back across the border.

My phone hasn’t worked since we crossed the border and after multiple calls to Verizon, no-one seems to understand why it’s not working.  Apparently a service ticket has been issued to a higher level but of course, this is the holiday weekend so I doubt anything will happen anytime soon.

We camped at the Fort William Historic Park in Thunder Bay, Ontario.  Doug and Brenda came and picked us up and then we all went to dinner and a quick tour around the city.  The 4th was a wonderful day – starting with breakfast at the Hoito Restaurant, a most unusual place.  There was a line-up and we were told there is ALWAYS a line-up; doesn’t matter when you go.  Besides having fantastic food, what was most unusual is that there is no host/hostess.  You stand in line and when you see an empty table you take it.

Then we were off to explore the waterfront, picked up some outdoor chairs at Canadian Tire, and took the tour at Fort William Historic Park.  When we got there the shuttle to go to the tour was full so we decided to walk down instead.  When we got to the bottom one of the workers came up to us and asked if we had been told it was okay to walk down.  We figured out that he was serious because we passed a bear trap that had live bait in it!!

The park is as it would have been in 1816 complete with dramas, demonstrations and re-enactments with all the staff in character.  The Fort is under occupation by Thomas Douglas, Earl of Selkirk and prominent shareholder in the Hudson Bay Company who has arrived at the Fort in retaliation for the destruction of his colony in the west.  Conflict ensues with the North West Company partners.

Doug then took us to Chippewa Park where we saw a melodrama called The MooseMeat Cook Off which was just hilarious.

Again, not able to upload any photos for whatever reason. ---
